Here in Hawaii, the June 20 summer solstice falls at 6:24 p.m. this year. For those who need a little more definition of the term "summer solstice," it's the moment when the earth tilts the most toward the sun and receives the most sunlight. It's also the official first day of meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and is officially the longest day of the year.

What a great place to be to experience those early sunrises and late sunsets. You can walk out your back door, maybe stop and enjoy the covered lanai if there's a light shower, then leisurely stroll across the vast lawn and contemplate the ocean as far as your thoughts can take you. Early in the morning (maybe clothed in a long-sleeved T-shirt if you've got year 'round Maui blood running in your veins because, y'know, seventy-degree oceanfront mornings can sometimes feel a bit chilly), sip a little Kona roast and watch the sun rise over the ocean.
At the end of the day, go out onto the same lana'i, maybe this time with a mai tai. Look toward toward the left where the sun sets over west Maui and the island of Moloka'i. Again, this daily miracle takes place just outside your door.
