Fatherhood on Maui in 1843

Father's Day. What a perfect occasion to reminisce.
The attached Maui News article, dated August 13, 1960 is worth reading. It's all about the history of Paholei Plantation, now known as Pueo Estate & Mauitouch Ranch, back in the days of mule power, water power and steam power.
Although the article doesn't address the issues of fatherhood, its accompanying photo - however grainy - certainly makes me wonder what the fathers might have been up to at the time.
Based on the bits of information here, I picture Dad living on the land, making decisions that would affect not only his family, but the families yet to come. How did these fathers who were instrumental in the sugar plantation culture celebrate the summers that only such a pristine place could provide? Did they twist their handlebar mustaches while playing bocce ball on the lawns? Did they consider their footprints on this land as instrumental toward developing Maui's future? Were they hoping that the people who would eventually be stewards of the land in the year 2015 would be respectful enough of its history to preserve its sugar mill ruins? Judging from the picture that accompanies the article, I would like to think so.
I would like to invite you to join me on a tour of this historic property located at 2372 Baldwin Avenue, just above Paia Town and below Makawao. You'll be pleased to find that the current owners care deeply enough about the history of the place to have dedicated themselves to restoring the main home (built in 1946) to its rightful position while being mindful of bringing today's conveniences to it. You'll also be pleased to find that the current owners understand the value of preserving the very sugar mill ruins that appear in the article above. In fact, they're now one of the most awe-inspiring aspects of Pueo Estate & Mauitouch Ranch.
Give me a call or drop me a line, and I'll be happy to take all fathers, mothers, sons and daughters to experience the property for themselves. It's worth the trip.

Victor Espinoza & American Pharoah

Let me start by writing that my marketing director has told me that I'm allowed one exclamation mark throughout my entire career. I think that, considering yesterday's big news, he'll let me by on this one. I'm about to use one. No - I'm about to use two. Openly. Defiantly. Here goes.

By now, everyone knows that Victor Espinoza and American Pharoah took that elusive Triple Crown - the first in 37 years!

Super duper incredibly exciting congratulations to all of #TeamAmericanPharoah!

Having earned five world titles and several national titles as a former professional athlete, I feel these kinds of successes on a deep, visceral level. Seeing American Pharoah cross that finish line was - in a word - rapturous. In another word - inspiring. Does American Pharoah understand the magnitude of what he's done? What a joy it would be to be able to explore his thoughts on this day after he made history.

Shifting gears a bit, I would like to introduce you to a property right here on Maui - a property that is already set up to be the perfect home for the next American Pharoah...the next Seattle Slew...the next Secretariat.

With 35 horse-friendly acres, a brand-new 6700 square foot barn featuring 8 stalls, 2 foaling stalls, a washing area, upper level mezzanine, ample large tractor and storage, Nelson® watering systems, and a horse pasture anchored by a sublimely mature banyan tree, this equestrian estate's current owners left no stone unturned. Keeping the barn's surrounding grass lush and green are the Tufftrack® grass-permeable pavers that allow trucks, tractors and horses to gather around the barn without causing lawn damage.
With all the essentials in place, from rigid high-density polyethelene fencing surrounding the barn and the same fencing separating four separate pastures to advanced computer controlled watering systems both indoors and out, the new owners can quickly and easily transition their horses to their comfortable new home.
To restore life and mana to its neglected house, its abused land and its depleted resources, and redefine the rolling hills as a world-class equestrian center. Utilizing thousands of hours of their own sweat equity and their own extensive knowledge of botanical restoration, the current owners did just that. They breathed new life into the main house, built a cottage whose views simply cannot be described with words, constructed a horse barn rivaling the best in the world, cleared the land and its breathtaking gulch of years of abandoned automobiles, household appliances and general litter and rejuvenated acres of newly healthy, carefree space for Mother Earth’s creatures to roam.
Pueo Estate has been transformed into a truly world-class equestrian property.
I would love to have the opportunity to take you on a tour. Until then, you can see more by logging on to http://www.2372baldwinavenue.com
You could maybe invite Victor and American Pharoah to come engage in a little well-deserved R&R. 😉
