Rumor has it that the newest model, allegedly to be called iPhone 6S, is supposed to be unveiled on September 9. Don't get me wrong. Those of us who live on Maui clearly understand that we’ve got it good here. The Values on Maui are Different

If you haven't yet had a chance to see the Disney/Pixar short entitled "Lava," you simply must make the 7-minute investment. Is the artwork breathtaking? Absolutely. Is the music mesmerizing? Of course. Is the story told in a way that tugs at your heartstrings? Yes, as only Disney can do.

There's more about this well-crafted little piece than meets the eye. One would think that it's impossible to tell a story that covers millions of years in a 7-minute short. One would be wrong. 

Ultimately, this little clip is so striking and so effective because it tells so much of the Hawai'i story so well without necessarily intending to do so. The people who created this story clearly know Hawai'i culture. It's almost as though they were present when so many of our centuries-old legends about betrayal, loyalty, birth and death were created; when Pele, Maui, the menehune and the legend of Ka'ena Point were integral parts of everyday life. Those legends are still alive, respected and very present today, and are among the countless reasons Hawai'i is so special.

The value systems are largely different here. Nature is revered. Relationships are sacred. Instant gratification is rarely a part of the picture. The belief that material possessions contribute to personal fulfillment is clearly a fallacy. 

I realize that these things are not overtly addressed in this beautiful little film. However, the story is honest on a visceral level because those things are clearly present to those who know the culture here. 

May I invite you to come experience the culture here, maybe viewed through a different set of lenses than the previous times you've visited; through the romanticized set of lenses that Disney has so eloquently conveyed in "Lava?"
