All The Charm of a Rockwell Painting

Did you know that Norman Rockwell, the artist famed for his depictions of everyday Americana has but a single Hawaiian masterpiece to his credit? It was created in 1956 and bears the name "The Thing to do with Life is Live It!" The painting recently sold for $1.625 million through a Christie's auction.

How magnificent that such a level-headed eye that clearly recognized the beauty in everyday simplicity should choose our rare and unique land as inspiration for one of his works.

I can only wonder what he might have created had he come to Maui in today's age and spent a little time in our little town of Haiku. Would he be drawn to the cute storefronts? The horses? The gulches? The tropical greenery? A seaside cliff? Would he sit somewhere on Giggle Hill and listen for the sounds of children's laughter drifting on the wind? I can almost picture the painting of a mischievous, shirtless little boy antagonizing a gecko that was unfortunate enough to get caught.

That's exactly the kind of life that Haiku offers, even in 2015. There's no pretentiousness. Everyone knows everyone else. You can walk to the post office and from there, walk directly to the grocery store.

If this kind of lifestyle appeals to you, give me a call. I'm not so great at painting, but I will be happy to show you this charming 2/2/2 Rockwellian Haiku home that sits on 2 very private acres:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/120-N-Holokai/866087360150115?ref=hl

#LiveTheDream

It’s no wonder Maui claimed the throne for 20 consecutive years as Conde Nast’s Best Island in the World. With 120 miles of coastline, an average daytime temperature that hovers between 75 and 90 degrees and more experiences than one can ever begin to fulfill, Maui serves as full-time home, part-time home, and world-class vacation destination to royalty, celebrities and mere mortals who understand the rejuvenating power of constantly reconnecting with nature in a way that only Maui can provide.

Now ready for purchase, Pueo Estate (http://www.2372BaldwinAvenue.com) presents a daily opportunity to do just that. This rare 35-acre jewel recently reimagined as a world-class equestrian center is perfectly poised above Paia town just where the slope of Maui’s mighty Haleakala begins, overlooking the famed North Shore with full bicoastal ocean views. The West Maui Mountains are a prized daily painting arising from the landscape just a few miles away, while the 10,023-foot Mount Haleakala is ever-present as the opposing backdrop.

This trophy property is truly beyond compare.

The focal point of Pueo Estate is the new 6700 square foot horse barn rivaling the best of any in the world. With 8 stalls, 2 foaling stalls, a washing area, upper level mezzanine, ample large tractor and storage, Nelson® watering systems, and a horse pasture anchored by a sublimely mature banyan tree, the creation of the barn and its surroundings left no stone unturned. Keeping the surrounding grass lush and green are the Tufftrack® grass-permeable pavers that allow trucks, tractors and horses to gather around the barn without causing lawn damage.

With all the essentials in place, from rigid high-density polyethelene fencing surrounding the barn and the same fencing separating four separate pastures to advanced computer controlled watering systems both indoors and out, the new owners can quickly and easily transition their horses to their comfortable new home.

Built in 1946, the 5,210 square foot main house has locally been known as The Sugar House for decades. The current owners wanted to preserve its unique character and history while bringing its conveniences into the present day. In fact, the current owners were so dedicated to integrity, they insisted on restoring new life to the ohia lehua hardwood floors and planting 300 ohia lehua trees on the property to help bring structure and ‘aina together as one. Utilizing koa in all the right places, granite in the centralized kitchen, and exquisite tile throughout, the upgrades are subtle yet sublime. A gentle split-level design follows the contours of the land.

Offering 5 bedrooms and 5½ bathrooms, the home is currently being reimagined with privacy in mind. As is the case throughout the entire house, each bedroom suite has new windows, all placed to take advantage of the breathtaking views, yet being respectful of each guest’s need for privacy through strategically placed landscaping.

Restoration of the main house is mostly complete, with all new siding, electrical, plumbing, walls, paint, bathrooms and flooring (new roof in process). The current owners had enough foresight to plan for the new owners by ensuring a completely updated, turnkey home while allowing enough leeway for personalized customization.

The current owners had a clear vision for the 35 acres and its 1946 Sugar House: To restore life and mana to its neglected house, its abused land and its depleted resources, and redefine the rolling hills as a world-class equestrian center. Utilizing thousands of hours of their own sweat equity and their own extensive knowledge of botanical restoration, the current owners did just that. They breathed new life into the main house, built a cottage whose views simply cannot be described with words, constructed a horse barn rivaling the best in the world, cleared the land and its breathtaking gulch of years of abandoned automobiles, household appliances and general litter and rejuvenated acres of newly healthy, carefree space for Mother Earth’s creatures to roam. Pueo Estate has been transformed into a truly world-class equestrian property.

The sugar mill ruins…they’re such an integral part of Pueo Estate’s persona, they deserve their own link. Click on this link (http://www.2372baldwinavenue.com/the-ruins/) to be taken back to this very spot 169 years ago – to a time when James K. Polk was President of the United States, Hawai’i was publishing “The Sandwich Islands News", the Liberty Bell was cracked while being rung in celebration of George Washington’s birthday, and the first steam ship arrived in Hawai’i.

These sugar mill ruins from 1846 sets Pueo Estate apart from all others. The history of the area is front and center simply because of the undeniable presence of this single structure. Luckily, the Frank C. Churchills, who bought the property in 1947 following the destruction of their sea-level property with the 1946 tsunami, recognized the need to preserve the ruins for posterity.

They were the first to re-imagine the ruins as a sport court, specifically utilizing it as a paddle tennis court. They also recognized the space as an incomparably beautiful entertainment spot.

Fast forward to 2015. The sugar mill ruins have been preserved in such a manner that they’re very much a priceless part of the landscape, serving as the irreplaceable bridge between its past and the new owner’s vision of its future.

With outdoor lighting, an industrial level of outdoor power, a built-in concrete wet bar, terraced concrete staging and built-in acid stained concrete seating in addition to lawn seating, this truly unique outdoor venue can serve as the centerpiece of any kind of social gathering, including weddings, cocktail receptions, outdoor theater, and intimate concerts. The current owners properly prepared for such gatherings by embedding ample septic underneath the Tufftrack® grass-permeable pavers (allowing thick, healthy grasses to grow while allowing trucks to deliver tents, food service, sound equipment and so on to the space. Night lighting simply adds to the goosebumps-inducing drama of this rare and beautiful structure.

With ample land well beyond these structures, Pueo Estate can serve simply as a family sanctuary with plenty of indoor and outdoor contemplative space that needs do nothing more than provide peace for its owners.

The basis of all life is water. Pueo Estate does not want for this precious resource that sometimes requires a great deal of legal wrangling to obtain on Maui. It cannot be stressed enough how valuable an asset the property’s 1.5” water main and 60,000 linear feet of subsurface piping are. Agricultural rates for water service are a pleasant, mind-at-ease benefit for the new owners of Pueo Estate.

With an abundance of fresh water and with the current owners having taken such great care to restore the land to a healthy, productive state, this rare canvas is ready for the new owners to begin creating their own masterpiece.

Envision yourself as the new owner of this heartfelt restoration. What colors are in your palette?
